The 2020 Brazilian Beach Soccer Championship was set to be the biggest competition for the sport ever held in the country, since it was created in the early 90s. There would be five stages in which 15 teams from 11 different states would fight for the title and, consequently, a place in the 2020 Libertadores.
However, with the Covid-19 pandemic and the cancellation of all sporting events for seven months, the competition was changed to just two qualifying stages and a final stage. What's more, its winner won't get a place in the intercontinental tournament, as Conmebol has already officially announced that it won't be holding the Libertadores beach soccer tournament in 2021.
In the first two stages (qualifying phase), the 15 teams were separated into two groups, divided by region. Group A with teams from the South, Southeast and Midwest, and Group B with teams from the North and Northeast.
In Group A, the seven teams in contention played on a straight points system, with everyone facing each other. In Group B, the eight teams were separated into Pool I and Pool II, with everyone playing against each other within each pool. The top two teams progressed to the semi-finals, with the losers playing for third place and the winners meeting in the final.
The four best teams in each group qualified for the third and final stage (final), where they were divided into two groups of four teams each, C and D, as follows:
Group C: 1st place from Group A, 2nd place from Group B, 3rd from Group A and 4th from Group B
Group D: 1st place from Group B, 2nd place from Group A, 3rd from Group B and 4th from Group A
The teams will play each other within their group. The top two will advance to the semi-finals, in a traditional cross-over model: 1st from Group C vs 2nd from Group D and 1st from Group D vs 2nd from Group C. The losing clubs play for third place and the winners make the grand final.
