It was exciting. It was in detail. It was a comeback. It came down to the last throw! That's how Vasco da Gama's conquest of the 2020 Brazilian Beach Soccer Championship can be summed up! Jordan scored the last goal in the penalty shootout, after a 1-1 draw in normal time and the same 1-1 draw in extra time.
The match got off to an unprecedented start. For the first time in the competition an opening period ended 0-0, showing that the two teams respected each other too much. The balance continued into the second half, with both teams doing everything they could to avoid mistakes. The only goal came from the star of the championship, Maranhão's No. 10 Datinha, a legend of the Brazilian national team. He scored from a free-kick to give his team the lead.
Going into the final period, the tension was clear between the two teams. Nobody wanted to make any mistakes. Vasco had no choice but to go for the equalizer, which came again through goalkeeper Rafa Padilha. He hit a fine shot and goalkeeper Bobô flew in to parry the ball away. The experienced Rafinha put himself in front of the opposing goalkeeper and didn't even see the ball hit his back and die in the back of the net. The score remained level until the siren sounded, taking the game into extra time.
Three minutes into extra time, another draw. In the first seconds, Luquinha scored from a free-kick for Vasco da Gama. But in the final seconds, Datinha also scored from a free-kick to make things equal again.
In the penalty shootout, the first three kicks were tied 2-2. In the alternate shootout, Rafa Padilha shone once again and took Edinho's spot-kick. The Jordan defender had the responsibility of taking the penalty that could give Vasco, champions in 2017 and 2019, their third Brazilian title, and he didn't disappoint. Ball in the net and Vasco celebrations on the sands of the Barra Olympic Park arena.
